Leads to Lasting Change

With the new year rolling in and reflections of the past starting to occupy our minds it times to take to take stock of what things we are capable of changing. As humans we are often resistant to change and some even go as far as saying, “I am fearful of change or I HATE change!” In reality we are constantly in a state of flux and evolving on a daily basis. With the new year coming in strong it is time to create a mindset that allows for lasting changes. Let’s kick off our transformation journey with a few affirmations.

“I am adaptable.”

“Change is easy for me.”

“I am capable of rolling with the ever-changing tides of my life.”

“I embrace change!”

"Change facilitates my growth into my best self."

"Change propels me into who I am meant to be."

Now armed with our newfound mindset and readiness for change, let's delve into the how-to of making those changes.

“By Small and Simple Things are Great Things Brought to Pass.”

One of my goals in life if to help moms feel more empowered with their mothering abilities as well as to enjoy motherhood. The world we live can make us feel like we made the wrong choice when we chose to be a mom or the constant barrage of memes, parodies, and jokes that constantly put down motherhood is overwhelming and does not serve our higher calling as a mother.

When thinking about a new goal to accomplish this year consider something to do you with finding joy in motherhood. This can even include self-care for you so you can be the best mom you can possibly be. For example, “I will take 10 minutes each day to breath.” How will this look? I will find a quiet room in my house and turn off any distractions such as TV and audiobooks. I will then follow a meditation that I enjoy or I will just allow myself to breathe deeply with or without music and allow my mind and body to become quiet and calm. *

Studies show that we are very shallow breathers and because we aren’t taking robust breaths, we aren’t cleaning out our systems as well as we could be. By just taking time everyday to breath, we can create space in our life to be more tolerant, loving and calm. It’s a grounding experience.

Establish a visible tracking chart, and each time you accomplish this task, mark it off. The act of putting a check mark beside completed tasks serves as intrinsic motivation. You can print off a tracking sheet here.

There are so many other goals that you could choose from that would be beneficial for any mom. Such as, daily walks with or without kids, family dinners, meaningful conversations with kids, learning a new skill or starting a new hobby, daily journaling or daily gratitude list, join a book club, weekly playgroups, recognizing emotions and deal with them in a meaningful way. The options are limitless. Take some time and figure out what will be the most beneficial for you to step into your best mom self.

*In a future blog post I will teach a you a breathing routine that I enjoy doing.

Seek Support

With the breathing goal in mind, communicate with your partner and children, informing them of your objective and expressing your need for support. Emphasize that this benefits everyone in the house and request no interruptions during this time. Clearly outline how it will look, making it known that this is your sacred mom time.

Once you've established this routine for yourself, consider teaching your kids the valuable skill of daily meditation and breathing. Create a quiet time in your home where everyone has a moment for recharge, refocus, and breathing. Start small with yourself and gradually introduce a routine for the entire family.

Again, use a visible tracking chart to mark off completed tasks for intrinsic motivation.
