Finding Happiness in the Small Things

...By small and simple things are great things brought to pass... Alma 37:6

Over the past year, I’ve been practicing a simple mental exercise aimed at shifting my outlook on life. This journey has significantly improved my mental clarity, helping me recognize what truly matters and allowing me to pause and savor the small, joyful moments that can make a lasting impact on overall happiness. It has helped me stay in a higher vibrational state which in turn allows for clearer communication from God. The results have been stunning!

Mental Exercise Rundown

Do you ever feel like the world is in utter chaos? Sitting at kids’ sports events, hearing the conversations around me, I sometimes feel disheartened by the constant negativity. People often focus on what’s wrong, which only adds to the chaotic energy around us. If you’re tired of being stuck in that cycle, try this 30-day mental exercise. It might just help you break free from the doom and gloom. Keep a journal to record your experiences and track your progress.

The mission is simple: every day, find three things that you can savor for a small moment. There’s no need to be precise with timing—just allow yourself the time you need to fill up on happiness, joy, and satisfaction. Engage all your senses throughout the day to fully experience these moments. Tuning into each sense brings your entire body into the moment, helping you make it special and allowing for a true shift in perspective.

Let me give you an example. After a busy afternoon running errands and shuttling kids around, I decided to sit down with a slice of apple pie topped with whipped cream. Normally, I’d just eat quickly and move on. This time, I chose to slow down and truly enjoy each bite. I savored the blend of spices, the sweetness of the apples, the creamy texture of the whipped topping. I closed my eyes, breathed in the comforting smell, and delighted in the flakiness of the crust. That small, five-minute experience gave me a mental breather and a genuine moment of happiness, ending my day on a positive note.

Another example is finding joy in nature. I’d just finished lugging in the last bag of groceries (my least favorite chore!) and was about to close the car when I noticed the beauty of the day. I stood on my front walk, appreciating the deep blue sky, the fluffy clouds, and the gentle, refreshing breeze. I closed my eyes, lifted my face to the sun, and took a few deep breaths. It was a simple but fabulous moment, filling me with peace and even lifting my mood enough to sing and dance as I put away the groceries.

There are countless ways to enjoy small moments like these each day. For example, when drinking your favorite beverage, take a few extra moments to be fully present. Notice how it tastes, smells, and makes you feel. Do you have a pet that brings you joy? Be fully present when petting, playing with, or simply admiring them. Or listen to your child’s laughter. Let the sound fill you with happiness.

The key is recognizing that these small moments can bring a reset, a sense of peace, and a reminder of the blessings around us—even amid life’s challenges. In a fast-paced, hectic world, this exercise allows us to slow down. It can also lead to practicing gratitude, which has its own healing power.

Results

The results of this simple practice have been truly remarkable. My outlook on life has shifted dramatically, and I find myself feeling calmer, even in situations that used to test my patience, like driving in rush-hour traffic. Instead of reacting with frustration when someone cuts me off without using a blinker, I remain composed. I’ve become kinder, seeking out ways to make others smile and feel seen.

For example, the other day at the store, I held the door open for an older couple who were a bit farther away. I wasn’t in a rush; I simply wanted to share a moment of light and kindness with them. In that moment, I realized that when you feel good about your life, it’s natural to want to spread that joy to others.

Now, imagine if everyone tried this mental exercise for just 30 days. How much love and positive energy could we collectively bring into the world? The impact could be transformative, rippling out and elevating the energy field around us.

The Challenge

For the next 30 days commit yourself to finding three moments a day in which you can be present in the moment and enjoy every aspect of it. Stay in the moment till you feel that you whole body takes in the positive energy that the world has to offer you. Record your experience in your journal so you can go back and see your progress.

Mini Challenge

Energy work, energy healing, mindfulness and other energy practices I wish I had in my back pocket before I had kids. Unfortunately, I did not discover this part of life until after my children had passed the toddler years. It is because of their baby years and their toddler years is why I searched for alternative forms of healing and holistic healing.

If you are lucky enough to have found this before having kids or while your kids are in your baby and toddler years start teaching them mindful practices. Start teaching them to be present in the moments and enjoy the small and simple things of life. It will only benefit the as they grow.
